Officials found the family two days later after relatives had reported them missing. By the time they reached the steep uphill section of the hike known as the Savage Lundy Trail, Briese said it was 109 F (43 C). But the temperature quickly climbed as the trail descended and the day heated up. It was about 74 F (23 C) when they started.
